I thought i'd post this rig up to give people an idea of how a pulley rig SHOULD be made
remember there are still variables such as hook size / length and mono breaking strain but this rig , as tied has never let me down !
the component parts :
The lead link , impact shield , bead plus LONG crimp for extra security - remember to ALWAYS leave the minimum gap possible between the lead clip and the crimp - there must be almost no room for the impact shield to slide..
The working end of the rig - you can use a swivel here instead but i find these breakaway proper pulleys invaluable .. remember a bead either side to work as a shock buffer ..
The business end of the rig - hook size and pattern will vary depending on choice of bait - here 2 x varivas big mouth hooks 3/0 have been used .. I dont think tubing is neccesary - simply 'turn' the top hook round the line 4 or 5 times to lock it onto place then insert through the top of the bait ..
To build the rig :
(a) Start with approx 30" of heavy mono ( 70-80lb ) and attach a lead link of your choice to one end - keep it small and neat and never use a swivel snap !
then thread on in this order - tubing , impact shield , 5mm bead , crimp ..
assemble the impact shield into the tubing and pull down tight to the lead link - then crimp in place .
(b) then thread on in this order - oval or round 5mm bead , proper pulley ( or swivel ) , oval or round 5mm bead and then tie on another swivel to the end ( here ive used a size 8 diamond eye crane swivel )
(c) cut approx 28 - 30 " of hooklength mono ( 25 - 40 lb ) - it needs to be slightly shorter than the body of the rig so that once the hook is placed in the impact shield the rig is taught and the strain of the pulley is on the heavy mono .. Tie one end of mono to swivel
and thread on top 'sliding hook' - i thread it from the back of the hook but you can buy penell hooks with a downturned eye .Then tie on second 'fixed hook' and the rig is complete.
If tied correctly when you assemble the rig and place the bottom hook into the impact shield , the pulley mechanism should sit approx one inch away from this swivel ..
make up half a dozen and try using 2/0 to 3/0 worm hooks for large lugworm baits or whole sandeel when fishing for Rays ..
